Happy Holidays!

Happy Holidays to all! Whatever holiday you celebrate I hope it's awesome and filled with books!
I got a couple gloriously illustrated books on Japanese prints (Hokusai & Hiroshige) and a hundred bucks in HPB gift cards that I can enjoy for the next few months. I'll for sure have to pick up the next Dungeon Crawler Carl book on audio but I'm not sure what else I'll be reading in the new year.
What bookish gifts did you all score today?

...but I'm Canadian, so I'm erring on the side of politeness. ;)
I'm Kat van Loon (first name is short for Katje, which is Dutch and confusing). Reader, writer, knitter, crocheter, baker, Cylon, witch. Massive geek.
I grew up reading...well, everything, but sci-fi and fantasy were my faves. Mom has a huge library (about 10,000 books) and I'm slowly catching up (I've got about 1,000 so far). I'm sort of terrible at writing reviews, because either I love books and ramble like a tumblr-user on a sugar-binge at 2am or I hate them and mock them relentlessly (like a tumblr-user...on a sugar-binge...at 2am). If I feel meh about books I don't bother reviewing. I'm trying to get better, however, and actually working on honing my reviewing skills so my reviews are still entertaining but also more coherent.
Hobbies include drunkenly livetweeting terrible films, shaking my cane at youngsters who are on my lawn, and attending my fiance's burlesque performances, whenever he actually gets off his butt to participate in them. (We are both incredibly lazy.)
User of LibraryThing, Shelfari, and GoodReads. Trying to up my usage of LibraryThing in particular, as it's the only one that's not (fully) owned by Amazon at this point. Anyway, I always like making new friends, so if any of you are on those sites feel free to send me a request. :)
I think that's the pertinent stuff. Happy to be on the site, and hopefully I can add something to the discussions.
-Kat
PS: Is the "reading list" on BookTrackr a "to-read" list? Want to be sure I'm using it correctly, and I couldn't find that particular piece of info in the FAQ or BookTrackr guide.

Famous Authors Might be Approachable to Debut Novelists

I was amazed and honored that he read and blurbed my novel:

"A fun, sometimes cleverly-gonzo, and even inspiring tale about an undaunted girl's close encounter of the weird kind." -- David Brin

As most everybody here knows, especially since he's listed as a famous author on this site, Mr. Brin is an American scientist and author of science fiction. He has received the Hugo, Locus, Campbell and Nebula Awards. His novel, The Postman, was adapted as a feature film and starred Kevin Costner in 1997.

Crime, mystery, detetive & spy novels

So, I really really like Worlds Without End. This site is what got me back to some serious science fiction reading, after many years away. It's also been the basis of more shopping trips than I can count. I'm in for a pound. But . . . .

Now that my marriage is past, I think that one of the very best things that could possibly happen right now would be if someone (like the folks who started this site, ) would create, or point me towards an already existing site, that is exactly like this site, except for being focused on crime, detective, mystery and spy novels. Somewhere that I could enjoy my fascination with Sax Rohmer, Sherlock Holmes, Dashiell Hammett, and Ian Fleming the same way this site lets me express my love of Philip K. Dick and so many others.

So, if the site is out there, and my searches just haven't turned it up yet, someone please please let me know.

And if it isn't (yet), well . . . you know . . .

Gene Editing

Genes can be edited? I did not know that. Today I ran across an article on Gizmodo entitled "HIV Genes Successfully Edited Out of Immune Cells." This article explains a process that could be used to greatly improve human health in the future, which is of course wonderful news. And because I'm currently working my way through Darwin's Radio by Greg Bear, I felt like I understood the article just a little bit better than I would have otherwise.

The article link: http://gizmodo.com/hiv-successfully-edited-out-of-immune-cells-1766413957

Yesterday was the 1-year anniversary of my membership in WWE.

I discovered this site via Tor.com and I've enjoyed my first year here.

I've read a couple of dozen books (some good, some not so good) and received good recommendations from some fellow members (for fantasy-flavored heavy metal as well as books), written reviews, read the blog, obsessed over the lists, completed a few RYO challenges, and generally have had a very good time indeed.

Thanks to the Admin and the Ubers and the RYO hosts and my fellow members for creating an enjoyable virtual literary retreat. Onward into Year Two!

Gloryhammer: SF/F-Flavored Metal

Earlier today, I was browsing in my local record store when a CD cover caught my eye. It was an image of a dark creature wearing spiky bone armor and wielding a staff and a glowing sphere in its clawed hands. The record is by a band called GloryHammer and the title of the work is "Space 1992: Rise of the Chaos Wizards." I knew nothing about the band, but the record store clerk praised it highly, so for the first time in forever I made a blind buy. I'm glad I did. The record is a masterpiece of fast, melodic metal. The songs mostly tell epic science-fiction/fantasy stories. The album starts off particularly strong with a 4-song brain-bending gutpunch of awesomeness: "Infernus Ad Astra," "Rise of the Chaos Wizards," "Legend of the Astral Hammer," and "Goblin King of the Darkstorm Galaxy." Apparently this new record is the second by GloryHammer and after this experience I absolutely must seek out their first. This is one of the most amazing albums I've ever heard and if you like epic fantasy and sci-fi and metal, I'd say you can't go wrong with "Space 1992." Dig it. Oh, and shop local and talk to the clerks. They may possess great knowledge.
