I have just lent my collection - from the first, bought in the 1970s - to a fellow fanatic here in Cape Town. She was as entranced as I was. A tour de force, a force of nature, and something that will never be equalled - for all its imperfections.

Consider: an infinitely winding river on what seems to be an artificial planet, with everyone who has ever lived on Earth prior to an as-yet unspecific calamity, being resurrected along its banks. Sir Richard Burton, Samuel Clemens, Herman Goering, warriors and demigods from out of time, all co-existing. Truly, truly amazing - and it really did need a series to explore just some of the potential of this amazing concept. PJ Farmer's crowning glory.
