This fairytale enjoyably combines aspects of 'old timey' writing style with modern sensibility and smartness. The world Valente creates with her vivid descriptions is full of new people, creatures, places and situations. I had a hard time putting the book down at night because I wanted to find out who or what was going to appear in the next chapter. If these aren't enough of a lure to get you to pick up this book, you must read it simply to meet September, the heroine, who starts the book as a crabby little girl who doesn't want to wash the dishes and becomes, well, she's still a little girl, but she has been through a series of adventures and challenges and made amazing friends. I'm excited to read the next book in the series and see what happens next…
