Both of the major characters in this novel, at different times, complain that they are surrounded by "stock characters." That, unfortunately, is the problem with this story: flat, two-dimensional, unexplained, unrealistic characters. That they are busy doing horrific things doesn't change the fact that it all comes across a bit like paper dolls (or Punch and Judy puppets) beating each other over the head. Or it could also be compared to reading a game of Clue. While the characters trip over the excessively abundant clues that the author has scattered about, the reader is left not really caring if Miss Scarlet or Colonel Mustard did it. But the plot is interesting enough that I held on until the end, because I really wanted to know that I was right in guessing the lead pipe in the dining room.
