Problematic, but good

I liked a lot of this book, but was very uncomfortable with a few things and I wish that there was some place that tagged old books with the various ways that they are problematic to modern readers. This one might be tagged: casual treatment of domestic violence, Freudian psychology, misogynistic treatment of female characters, outdated ideas about sexuality (see: Freudian psychology). Getting past or through those elements, I enjoyed the scaffolding of the world in the book. I liked the idea of the ships that can only go to pre-set courses and "prospecting" to find out what is at the end of any of those courses. Overall, I could see myself reading the next in this series.
