War and violence, racial tolerance, loneliness. All are dealt with in this book but not in the way you might think. There are no raging battles with aliens, just one lone man running a way station for alien travelers.

Enoch Wallace was recruited shortly after the Civil War over a hundred years ago to convert his home to a way station for alien travelers. Incidentally his home is in Millville, Wisconsin, which is also the author's birthplace. Neither he nor his house has noticeably aged. This fact comes to the attention of a certain agency in Washington, which begins a surveillance campaign against Enoch. Enoch knows he is being watched but as long as there is no interference he does nothing about it. Then the lead agent makes a major mistake and causes many things seem to spiral out of control almost ending the human race.

The author pulls everything back together in a surprising twist, but at the end Enoch seems more alone than ever as "He had said his last goodbye."
