I enjoyed this book, but it is kind of lacking in distinguishing features. It remains to be seen whether the rest of the series takes it somewhere more interesting.

Our hero was raised in a church which regards magic as witchcraft. Reprieved from execution, he ends up at a magic school, and begins to develop his powers. And that's more or less it. There's a climactic conflict, and some pointers to where the series is going.

I enjoyed it well enough, and I'm happy to add the next book to my wishlist, but it lacked that special spark to lift it out of the crowd. 3/5
