City is a series of stories that were published in Astounding magazine right after WWII. They are tied together with editors notes, the editor of the Doggish persuasion. The stories move forward through time over several thousand years following the Webster family and their robot servant Jenkins and the eventual demise of the human race. The first story, set in the mid-twentieth century, is quite dated, but after that, not so much. The Websters develop a race of sentient dogs. There are robots, and wild robots, and mutant humans, and technological ants.

This is a series, in the same way that there are so many series of novels in the science fiction genre, Each story follows from the last. The little interconnecting editorial commentary vignettes are an interesting touch, but really not necessary.
