The Somnambulist

This book was a real disappointment. Unfortunately, I had already purchased The Domino Men by Barnes. Before diving into that book, I decided to borrow this earlier work from the library. I wish I had not done that. Because...

• The plot is a rambling, incoherent mess.
• None of the characters are particularly likable.
• The titular character is merely a mute side-kick to the main protagonist
• The protagonist is a clueless a-hole.
• Smug prose.
• Illogical character behavior.
• We are given no back-story on The Somnambulist. What is he? Why is he the way he is? Why is he so dedicated to Edward Moon?
• The head-hopping. Ugh! The viewpoint shifts erratically between characters.
• Magical Realism. Not my favorite genre to begin with; this book is like a clinic on how to do it wrong!

I could go on but I've wasted enough time reading this turgid pile of steaming offal. I'll not waste any more time writing a review.

Too bad. And to think, I still have another of his books on my shelf - and I can't return that one to the library.

Definitely not recommended.
