Gail Carriger has had several years to perfect her writing style, which is why it came as a bit of a shock that her first entry into her new steampunk series the "Custard Protocol" entitled Prudence was a bit of a flop. Not completely, but it was a disappointment. Her lush descriptions and slight snark have always lead to an entertaining, if somewhat light reading experience. The problem with Prudence was she just took it to far this time. The book quickly went from precious descriptions and snark into ridiculousness with the speed of a Lady-bug decorated dirigible. This continued for the first 2/3rd of the book. The last 1/3rd was its saving grace. When Ms. Carriger finally got around to advancing a plot, the novel became more of what I love about her writing. I'm not willing to give up on this series because of the that last third of the novel.
