I only rated this novel 1 1/2 stars because I only gave it a "C" when I read it.
This one is moderately good - but nowhere near as good as subsequent efforts by this pair. I especially enjoyed Dream Park, California Voodoo Game, and Saturn's Race. My favourites by this duo are The Legacy of Heorot and Beowulf's Children (these latter two with Jerry Pournelle as yet another co-author).
In my rating system, a C - gets one star, and I increase by a half-star with each step up to an A+, which gets 5 stars. One half star is reserved for bombs... D+ and lower.
