I found use of weapons a little tough to crack initially. The conceit of having two narratives running counter temporally in alternate chapters is fascinating but a little distancing initially. The forward running strand following Zakalwe through the latest mission for the culture is the easiest, snappy and felt a bit like classic sixties SF. The retrospective strand, looking at scenes in Zakalwe's previous history was a little more hit and miss, requiring more of an effort to fully engage. I'm deliberately avoiding discussion of the plot as I think that this is best experienced de novo, all the way to a final act rugpull.
