Nebula Award nominated short story. It originally appeared in Amazing Stories, December 1976. There are no other known publications at this time but the story has been expanded into a novel of the same name.

This original novel served as the basis of the authors' screenplay/screen story for the Star Trek: Next Generation third-season episode, "Tin Man".
