In the days that followed the end of the world, few could have predicted the Rust Wind, a phenomenon that swept across Japan like a plague, choking the life from the land and its people and corroding flesh into brittle, iron sand. No one knows how the Rust began, but one mushroom-wielding renegade known as Bisco Akaboshi, the Man-Eating Redcap, is determined to bring about its end. He's the latest in a long line of Mushroom Keepers, and together with the dashing young doctor Milo Nekoyanagi, the two will brave the horrors and wonders of the Iron Desert in search of the Rust-Eater: a mythical mushroom rumored to have the ability to cure the ailment once and for all.

In search of a cure for Bisco's immortality the Man-Eating Redcap and Panda venture to the holy land of Shimane. Once there, they have an unexpected brawl with the legendary monk Kelshinha. During their fight, he rips Bisco's stomach right out of his body--and with it, his edge over the symbiotic Rust-Eater spores ravaging his very DNA--before making off with it. Now Bisco and Milo must hunt down this death-defying madman and retrieve the vital organ before the Rust-Eater kills Bisco in five days' time. Sure, he didn't want to be immortal in the first place, but this is not the cure Bisco had in mind!

Having rid the world of the Immortal Monk--Kelshinha--the pair of Man-Eaters travel to Bisco's ancestral homeland in Shikoku, picking up Tirol somewhere along the way. Once they arrive, Mushroom Keepers young and old venerate Bisco as a living god, throwing celebration after celebration in his honor (much to his dismay). Festivities are cut short, however, when a red-haired man named Apollo crashes the party! He manipulates mysterious, glowing blue particles at will, and wherever they land, skyscrapers sprout with all the ferocity of a mushroom arrow! His goal? Restore Japan to the way it was in the year 2028. In order to understand the significance of that year, Bisco, Milo, and Tirol need look no further than the Tokyo Crater...
