I'm taking the challenge to mean 35 books on my TBR as of 1/13/14. I haven't filled in all the slots since my TBR is over 100 books and I don't know which of the others I will read next.

You, my Totoro sporting friend, need closer to 52 book challenge due to the size of your TBR list. But welcome anyway. That is the challenge, to get through what's already on the shelf. Cheers and good wishes for the year.

We are now 20 days into the challenge. This challenge now has 11 participants. Of those, five of us are still on track with a book-every-ten-days reading pace. That's the way to start out right. For those slightly behind, it's still not to late. But be warned, it will be to late very quickly.

What makes this a challenge for me is simply the length of the books on my list. I have at least 10 that are 600 pages plus. And only the Dick on my list are under 300. Now that I think about it, it's really a reflection of era and how modern novels tend to be longer than things from earlier, which is, of course, a reflection of writing technology. Well, we all wanted a challenge now didn't we.

I liked the TBR reduction aspect, so I joined. I think I have 4 to 5 years of TBR and I've only had an ereader/audiobook account since 2008. Sad.

Welcome ManyMoons. Don't be sad. I'm doing this challenge exclusively with paper. No ereaders here. Once that shelf I mentioned in the intro to the challenge is empty, I'm seriously going to post a picture of it.

Hello everybody. I'm thinking about adding a requirement, or just simply asking you here in the forum to do this during the challenge.
What I'd like is for everyone to find three quotes during the year, that they can add to the random quote section here on the site. We all have 35 books, so I think it's highly probably that a few phrases or sentences must stand out in those 35 chances.

I just added my first one tonight.

Any thoughts?

I am feeling a bit smug at being an overachiever at the moment. However, because I am a teacher the rhythms of my reading year are much different than most folk's. I will start lagging behind soon, but I hope to catch up in the summer.

Also, I have several big books on my list: Drood, Cryptonomicon, The Years of Rice and Salt, and Hyperion. I'm glad that I've knocked out Red Mars, but that still leaves me about 3000 pages over 4 books.

I'm a bit behind only because I'm reading the 2 books in the Dresden series that I don't already own. I have one left. Then, I have 6 or 7 in a row that I do own (and none that have been read). Then I can start another, yet unread, series that I own. I'm still confident that I will reach 35 by the end of the year. It's just going to go in spurts (I also read mysteries and crime fiction). Yes, I have some long ones on my shelf, but they get listened to when I am doing a long, brainless part of a quilting project.

I thought that when we reach the 100 day mark, on 4-10, that would give us a good indication who would make it and who wouldn't. (On a side note, We're 100 days into the year ?!?!?!) There are seven of us who are in the 7,8,9 book read range. We're only slightly behind the pace. (We can make it guys. We can, we can.) One of us on pace at 10. And four show offs who have the luxury of reading for pleasure far more than I do. (Lucky sods!) They're way ahead. Those who remain, fall further and further behind. I certainly hope they have better luck with whichever of the other challenges they opted into.

Even though I may not meet the challenge, that's the point. It's a challenge. ANY progress is better than none, IMHO, since, in my case, these are books I own that I have not yet read. I work this one in with other goals, such as finishing series. Many of my books aren't listed on the site, so I just do what I can do.

Hello all. I hope you are well and doing well, wether you're doing well with the challenge or not. We're about 200 days in, so we should be hitting book 20, if you're on the one-every-ten-days plan. (How in the hell did we get that far into the Year?!?!?!) I've fallen off the pace. I've only got 11 down. It's my own fault. I've actually read 16 books since the start of the year but only 11 could count for the challenge. And then there's the fact I "discovered", which means I knew, I just didn't what to admit it to myself, that I had over 90 volumes of manga sitting around the house I hadn't read yet. 90! So, I decided to read that instead. Such is the best laid plans of mice and men. I suppose I could catch up if I read short, 200 pagers, but I've got Three by Stephenson, and two by Simmons. If I get through those five, that's 3500 pages or so. Gee, the rest of my reading year is planned out. But then, that's why it's called a challenge. So, tip of the cap to those on pace or above. A hearty come on guys, to those slightly behind the pace. And a bow to the early finisher.

The clock has caught me at least. I only have 15 books read for the challenge and we're now under the 100 days left in the year mark. Some of you are doing far better. We're had one finisher. We have 6 more people who are in the 30ies and will certainly finish before the end of the year. We also have 8 people in the 20 somethings. They can finish as well, if the petal hits the metal. The point from the start was to read what you already had on hand. Any empty shelves yet? Me neither. I kept moving unread books to one shelf. At least, mostly, what I have sitting around the house that's unread, is on that one shelf. That's progress, right? I'm certain that shelf has another years worth of material sitting on it, waiting. Perhaps if the speed of my reading went up. It's just a thought.

I feel very good because I have read books that I have had on my shelves for 10+ years (not every book, but many of them). So, for me, next year's 35 challenge will consist of books that have not been on my shelves for so long and many of them will be books that I have purchased this year. I love this idea as a way to make myself read what I buy (and not wait 10 years to do so).

I just keep plugging along since I not only have other challenges (why do I do that?) and other genres not part of WWE among my unread books. Still, I continue to try focusing on books that fulfill this challenge as well as the others.

Well, here we are as the last dregs of the year drain away. I'm stunned. 12 of the 27 people in the challenge finished. Good job, good job. And we had three more over thirty. Very good. And just think, in going over those lists, some of us had some really heavy 800, 900 page monsters. That's amazing people.

P.S. - No, I didn't manage to clean off my unread book shelf. I just found more books stuck away in boxes which made their way onto the shelf. It's fuller now than this time last year.

Congrats to everybody who got even ONE book read for the challenge. For all of us, it means that you finally used something that you paid for!

I only completed 26 books, mostly due to multiple challenges AND having knocked off many books in other genres. All but 2 of the books on my list were audiobooks. Also, thanks to our WWE Guru who had to add some of my books to the database. Sure, I would do this again in 2015.
