There are many male authors who write genre fiction but some readers prefer to read female authors.  If you are one of those readers, this challenge is for you! Expand your “girl power horizons" and challenge yourself to read more male authors in 2017.  

Share which authors you've chosen for the challenge.  Tell us who your favorite male authors are.  Discuss why you prefer female authors and why this challenge is challenging for you.

Interesting! I *wish* I had this problem; one of the reasons I joined the *opposite* challenge was because it's very difficult for me to find female authors. I would love to compare notes with someone who is struggling with this: I may have some male author recommendations to offer and I've love to get some female author recommendations in return!

Location: behind the 4th wall		I think you're probably in the majority, Sable. I wasn't sure if there'd be much interest in this type of challenge but I thought maybe, just maybe, there'd be other readers like me who have a preference for female authors. Plus, I was trying to force myself to stop deleting male authors from my TBR list.

It seems to me that male authors tend to write a lot of action, violence, war, and politics, whereas women focus more on story development, psychology, and relationships, which I much prefer. For years I didn't even think I liked sci-fi because I did not enjoy reading the "old men" (Heinlein, Asimov, Dick, et al) but I've discovered that I do enjoy sci-fi that was written in the last 10-15 years, though usually by female authors.

Some female recommendations for you? Well, these are some of my favorites.....

Let's see: based on those preferences, I would suggest Samuel R. Delany, Robert Sawyer, and possibly Gene Wolfe. And if any more occur to me (these are just off the top of my head) I will let you know.

Location: behind the 4th wall		I've almost added Calculating God by Sawyer to my TBR list many times. Based on your rec, I have finally done so. Thanks! I've read Wolfe's Long Sun series and liked, but didn't love, it. I had to read Delany in college....ugh...my brain. He's a challenging one, he is.

Location: New Zealand		My favourite male authors would include Robert J Sawyer, Robert Charles Wilson, Jon Courteney Grimwood (particular 9 Tail Fox), Tim Powers, James Blaylock, Graham Joyce, and of course the wonderful Guy Gavriel Kay. If you haven't tried any of those I say give them a go.

I actually seem to have pretty much a 50/50 split on the male and female authors I read.

  • John Varley
  • David Weber (Honor Harrington series)
  • Paolo Bacigalupi (maybe)

Those are just off the top of my head - there have got to be a bunch more I'm not thinking of at the moment...
