Slightly disjointed story and most of the PCU team were kept in the background for the first two thirds of the novel. The author's breadth of knowledge of London's disreputable history continues to bring colour though this time around the basis was possibly a little more prosaic, not so out there as seventy seven clocks or the Victoria vanishes for example. Bryant and May remain engagingly contrasting characters and brilliant protagonists. The biggest failing I think is that the antagonists are less interesting this time round, though the flashbacks to a certain pair of characters progression are well conceived vignettes. However as a resolution of this mini trilogy mapping Arthur's cognitive deterioration it was ultimately very satisfying.
