The first book introduced the reader to "Area X." The second book introduced the reader to government body known as "The Southern Reach." This third book tries to answer the questions the first and second book created; and in this the book is only partially successful.

To me, this third book was a departure from the other two. The first two were driven by world building. This is established by refusing to use the names of the characters, but only their titles. This third book is much more character driven. I finally felt something for the characters. I especially enjoyed the character of "Control." He is the most human of all the characters in the books.

I don't think this book answered enough of the questions, but did answer some. And I am not even going to pretend that I truly understand what Area X ever was.
