I feel as though I should have liked this a lot more than I did. It had fascinating historical backgrounds, really rich and vivid descriptions, and a cavalcade of intriguing characters - but there were too many characters, and too many storylines. I enjoyed the fairy tale retelling, but the framing of that story didn't work for me, and the main character of the framing story was supremely annoying.
