I've enjoyed the two previous volumes in the The World of Tiers series when I was (much) younger, but today this book feels dated, both in writing style and contents-wise.

The idea of a terraced artificial world is still neat. Unfortunately, the characters are one-dimensional and stereotypical; the damsel in distress needs to be protected by the sexist and egotistical hero.

The author's style feels clunky compared to today's standards, and is repetitive in places. For example, when the author describes the varied fauna, he mentions at least at 3 or 4 occasions that these creatures were created by Wolff in his biolabs. Mentioning this fact only once would have been enough, no need to repeat it this often.
