I made a point of reading this novel because I was so impressed with the worldbuilding and the alienness of the aliens in A Darkling Sea. And the worldbuilding and aliens in this story are very imaginative and well-done. But the story itself... is, sadly, a real disappointment. The plotting and prose are rather a mess, and there is actually a literal deus ex machina, which pushed me past "meh" into "you've got to be kidding me".

I would have liked to at least be able to recommend this as a YA or MG novel, but honestly, I don't think that at the age of 12 I would have been any more impressed with it -- but this is worth a read, if you're interested in vividly-imagined aliens and alien cultures.
