Not one of Anderson's better books. It feels like it was written in the 50's not the 70's, replete with a damsel in distress and a Cold War baddie. The alien, who is interesting at the start, is just a vehicle for the story and becomes irrelevant. The ending is like a bad detective novel. How this got nominated for a Nebula, I don't know. It could have been a lot more.
