WotW is a surreal classic. It's surreal because it had real life effects, causing mass panic during it's initial radio broadcast. The story itself is superb, moving along at a great pace and containing just enough detail to be fully immersed, while not bogging down much at all. Short, but sweet, a must read.
The Time Machine is also a very good book. It's a bit longer, and more drawn out, but the parallels of humanity and depth of adventure make up for a great story line. Who knows what will happen when time ends?
