Not to be Missed.

I really wondered how she would reshape the story to make it her own. Fabulous job.

Kingfisher starts with Poe (Usher), then she adds a drop of Lovecraft. She sets the thing in the late 19th century, making everyone ex military. That moves the characters mindset away from the superstition, curses, and madness of Poe, bringing it up to a more science driven POV. But, this is crucial, she sets the action in a Ruritania-esque mid-european backwater, that still hasn't moved into the late 19th century. This sets in motion a dynamic between the old and the new. The curses and superstitions and the need for these ex military people to find a more scientific explanation for what goes on.

Which circles us back to the drop of Lovecraft (The Colour Out of Space) modified for this particular adventure.
