This is a first-person exploratino of a hero who is both visually blind and chemically impaired by his addiction, and who has to struggle to survive in a space ship filled with people who are little concerned with anyting but their own pleasure.
The story is presented in such a way that the reader will feel 'blinded' and 'confused' by the descriptions and style of writing until they find their perspective in much the same way the protagonist does.
Along the way, a mystery and violence sparks a quest for the hero who finds redemption from his literal and chemical blindness.
Seen from the historical perspective of Leiber's own alcoholism, this book is almost a fictional memoir, putting much of his own experience into a space story.
While a bit challenging at first, persistence by the reader will prove to be rewarded. A Hugo worthy work.
