Rereading for the 10th anniversary. Despite some shaky moments, it sticks the landing and it's place as a masterpiece. It hits all the marks for me; I love books that play around with language. This makes Prince's poetry and Majnoun knowing all human language like candy for me. The philosophical themes are tight, and Alexis ability to elicit emotion in the reader, from deep laughter to intense grief, is, to me, unmatched in literary fiction. The book is certainly not without it's flaws; the sexual references get to be a lot in the beginning half and the moments of light in it's pages are almost taken over by extremely dark sections. I can overlook that, because it's unparalleled in so many other areas. This is a title I will be revisiting again and again.
