It seems like Peter S. Beagle has lost his fastball. This is not a bad book, however it does have some problems. The tonal shifts are dramatic and unexpected and strange. It feels like it's going to be a bit of a cozy, silly book about a dragon exterminator who loves dragons. And the dragons at the beginning of the story and small little nuisances that live in the walls. However, there is an abrupt, very brutal shift in tone that arrives and completely changes the narrative, and not for the better in my opinion. The book also feels rushed which makes the resolution unearned. A bit more time and effort should have been put in to expand the story.
