Easily 5 stars, this magical book has wondrous beasts, scheming brothers and the strongest female character I have read in a long time. The 50th anniversary edition is a beautiful tome with lovely line drawings - yet this one must go back to the library.
This is a story about wisdom and forgiveness and most of all learning how vengeance must be left behind lest it destroy all. I found the story well written, italics used to portray the thoughts of the animals and the witch. Truly a hard book to put down.
I remember reading only one other book by the late author, also 5 star. Clearly her works call out to me, and I long to reply.
