A prequel to the series; the same author wrote two follow-on books to try to ease the pain of the abrupt ending (cancellation).
The story of younger Max is told through flashbacks in the television series. The escape part of that is here, but very sparse. The main focus of the first half is an interlude between, Max as a member of an LA street gang holed up in Mann's Chinese Theater. This part is mostly okay. Then Max comes to Seattle and these scenes lead right up to the beginning of the show.
I started this two years ago as part of a reading challenge (tie-in books or something like that). I wasn't compelled to finish it. Picked it up earlier this year (the oh-so-portable paperback) and finished it this time. It was just okay. I do feel compelled to rewatch the series, so in that the book at least did its job?
One of the genres selected for WWE is "Near Future" - the book is set in 2019. Ha!
