The Sirens of Titan

Unfortunately reading the Sirens of Titan only served to confirm that I don't like Vonnegut's writing style. He has some interesting ideas and the books are humorous, but his style is like a cartoon; quite simple and easy to read but everything is over the top, there's nothing outside of the frame, and the book is full of what comes across as three part set pieces that repeat jokes and references that I didn't find funny the first time. On top of the multiple solar watch references (now dated - but surely not that interesting then), he keeps going on about German Batball, not just describing it and having people play it, but also using it as a comparitor - that the alien robot's feet can inflate to the size of German Batballs is repeated many times and I didn't find that interesting or funny the first time it was mentioned.

The sci-fi is just wishy-washy phenomena that are explained as though they are fantastic but just don't make sense.

And why is one of the main characters called Rumfoord with 2 o's? It's an English name that I have no idea how to pronounce. Is that supposed to be funny? I don't get it.

I'm told that it's a book that needs to be read twice to really "get", but I will not be doing that. Maybe I'm just not the audience for it.
