The Birds

Read as part of a collection called The Birds and Other Stories. Six stories, and everyone has heard of (or at least seen) The Birds. The other five are a mix of gems and bits of glass. Regardless, it was a great read around Halloween.

The story version of The Birds inspired the film, but much was also lost. This is a slice-of-apocalypse story, with our savvy and self reliant narrator dominating his family to keep them alive and dealing with the situation... at least for now. I read this story a few decades back and liked it just as much now.The remaining stories in the book are new to me. I liked Monte Verita and The Old Man. Kiss Me Again, Stranger was fun, but quite short. The protagonist in The Little Photographer deserves what she gets. The Apple Tree provides bitter fruit indeed. Your mileage may vary - I recommend giving Daphne du Maurier a few hours of your time.
