This novel set in the near future is about autism and bears a certain similarity to "Flowers for Algernon".

Elizabeth Moon has an autistic son so this is obviously a heart felt novel. The bases are loaded in favor of the protagonist however. He is a very high functioning autisitic person with a genius level IQ. He has the advantage of his society's advances in education for autisitic people which brings out their highest potential. He is also fortunate not to have the poor motor skill that affect most autistics (he fences).

While well written I felt there was a lack of emotional depth to the character. I did not feel the loneliness that is said to afflict high functioning autistics or out of control panics that people like Temple Grandin have said they experienced.
