I liked The Scar better than Perdido Street Station. I thought the pirate city was well conceived and executed. In fact this is the sixth Miéville book I've read (previously read, The City and the City, King Rat, Un Lun Dun, Perdido Street, and Embassytown), and I think that Miéville's particular talent lies in his cities and cityscapes. They are infinitely more interesting (and generally more likeable) than the characters that he develops. In The Scar I can also see ideas of linguistics and cultural contact developing that Miéville explores later in The City and the City and Embassytown. From what I've read, many people believe that The Scar is the strongest of the three. I will complete the series with Iron Council. It is on a couple of my RYO challenges.
