I really wished I could have liked this more than I did. First, there was head-hopping, always a pet peeve of mine - if my fanfic beta reader could cure me of it with one good rap on the knuckles, the first time she ever beta'd for me, why do these professional editors let it get by them? Not to mention the grammatical errors. But that's nit-picking, even though they are fairly good-sized nits to pick. The opening chapters were superb, and really grabbed my interest, but as the story progressed in its leisurely manner, I felt as though I was, I don't know, just getting the edges of the story? Like there could have been so much more to it? And the climax was anti-climactic (literally; once our heroes made it back to the palace, they were told "Oh, sorry, there's this OTHER ALSO DANGEROUS AND IMPORTANT TASK you must complete. Then everything will be fine.")

I like Malinda Lo as a blogger, and really appreciate and support what she's doing for diversity in YA literature, but I've read a couple of her books, now, and don't really think I'll read any more, or not for a while, yet, anyway. I'll check back later.
