I have mixed feelings on this one. On the one hand, the story is good, but kind of average. On the other hand, the world Banks has set up here has the potential to be fascinating.
The story itself is a fairly standard space opera adventure, with our characters setting out to find an artificial mind on a forbidden planet. It does not end well. In fact, it's a little depressing.
The world Banks has created pits two radically different cultures against each other, both sides believing they have to win this war in order to protect their way of life. Certainly you can see our own world within this scenario. This is what I want to explore further, and so I will continue on to see if this series fulfils the potential it shows here.
