The only thing this and Doomsday Book have in common is time travel at Oxford University, and two characters. And yet it was, in every way, just as brilliant. Not as gutting as Doomsday, admittedly, but that was because of the difference in style: this is upbeat and lively, where Doomsday was dark and rather bleak. It was also nice to be presented with so many things going on. The end ties it altogether, and also shows Willis' philosophical hand.

I'm glad I read Three Men in a Boat to pick up all the references, and Doomsday Book to ease into the world Willis has built more easily, but neither are in any way essential. What a marvellous thing for a standalone series. Also, I'm always surprised when I'm reminded Willis is in fact American. There's a woman who gets Britain, the British and their mannerisms, for better or for worse.
