Mankind has been rendered sterile by its own folly. For years - decades - no children have been born. Civilization breaks down as revolutions, wars, disease sweeps the lands. Nature reclaims what once was hers. But all this is just the background for this book - the search of one couple for meaning in their life.

There is very little science fiction in this book - only the basic premise. Other than that events unfold as they might. And the people act as I imagine they would. With violence, with denial, with suicide, muddling through as best they can.

The story left me with much food for thought but no desire to read it again soon. I expect it - in particular its masterful writing and imagery - will stay with me.

Recommended, but don't expect to be entertained.
