Post-apoc survivalist fiction with heart

Surprised by how much I enjoyed this dystopian tale about the birth of a new kind of religion. Although it still relies on the same ol' bothersome aspect of dystopian fiction: that most people will degenerate to beastly behavior at the onset of political and economic collapse, but this might the best dystopia novel I've read, for at least it delves into a richer human experience among the protagonist and her community of people. It seems to tread water in some places, but it kept my interest, and I usually get bored halfway through survivalist fiction.
