In State of Fear, it seemed obvious that Crichton was pushing an agenda, and after at the end of the story, he made his case for his agenda, which was that misguided and incompetent environmentalist and pseudo-scientists do as much environmental damage as industry and development. In the story, environmental activists were portrayed as over-zealous buffoons or as terrorists. He pushed that too far and it just didn't ring true. The doings of the good guys, seemed a little to super-human and disjointed. Definitely not one of Chrichton's best efforts.
