| This challenge gave me the spur to register here. A long time lover of SF (Patrick Troughton was my first doctor - ahem) but I was often frustrated by the limited roles females (and indeed anyone other than alpha males) played in many of the stories I read. Thank goodness times have changed (mostly) and there is so much more genre goodness to enjoy. I hadn't seen your list of female authors but will be using it in the future. Great to see the wonderful (and much mourned) Margaret Mahy there. Was surprised that Elizabeth Knox was not included. While I didn't warm to her most famous novel (The Vinter's Luck) but YMMV, I loved her Dreamhunter/Dreamquake novels (mature YA) and Daylight was a pretty decent vampire tale.
Anyway, sorry to ramble. I am keen to have a stab at this challenge and look forward to exploring some of these authors' work.

Location: Washington state | Since you mentioned above that Susan Palwick is on the list to be added, would you please add her novel "Shelter" while you're adding her? I'd like to include it for my challenge.
I'd also like to request Molly Gloss (many good books but specifically "Wild Life," which won that elusive Tiptree award) and Hiromi Goto (whose "The Kappa Child" also won a Tiptree.) If you get around to adding that awards list, they'll be added anyhow, but if the list doesn't get added for a while, I'd still like to read those two authors.
Another: Jessica Amanda Salmonson, whose trilogy - Tomoe Gozen, The Golden Nagata, and Thousand Shrine Warrior - from the 1980s is regarded as some of the finest alt-Japan fantasy/alternate history out there (and which is scowling at me from my shelf for neglecting it so long.)

If I have come to the right place then I would like to humbly request that Leigh Bardugo be added. Following repeated recommendations I have just read her debut title Shadow and Bone, the first book in her YA trilogy. I believe the rights have been sold for a potential movie (link below) and you can see good things said about her book all over the net.

I can understand you not including books just because a story in them won a WFA - it would be nightmarish to work out which stories were in which collection accurately (and then what about stories incorporated into novels?) - but I really do think that you ought to - not as part of this WOGF project, but just as part of the basic 'list of award-winning books' project - include winners/nominees of Anthology and Collection awards as well as just Best Novel. Collection, at the very least, since it's not even always clear what's a collection and what's a novel! [Quite a few award-winning novels are really linked short-story collections.] |

| I just glanced at the wikipedia page and assumed any title not in quotation marks and with publisher info was a novel. That might have been misleading.

| I think you are right about the quotation marks. At least it hold true for Le Guin. But a lot of the novels have won for other things that are in WWE and the winners for the last 2 years are in anyway. I count at least 15 winners that are in the db already. |

Collections and anthologies are something that I'm rather eager to get to but right now we have our hands full just dealing with novels. Still several awards we want to get in first before we branch out of the novel categories. We do put in lots of collections and anthos, especially if requested, but there's much to be done before we can shift our focus for the awards and lists. We'll have to find a way to deal with the short stories in the list but I'm sure we can come up with a solution when the time comes. |

I've ended up giving up about 2/3 of my reading time to work on the site but I've dropped some other hobbies to compensate for it a bit and I tend to gravitate towards shorter books now so I can dip into more authors. But you know, the next best thing to reading books is talking about them and there are other benefits gained in the trade off like all the great people from around the world I've met through WWEnd. It's a lot of work but I'm still having fun! |

I'd say this is a perfect novel if you wanted to learn the art of book to movie. See the movie, read this, and you can really see how the script was formed.
Admin. Howl seems to be the first of three books. The House of Many Ways is a direct sequel and Booklist says about Many Ways: Its been a long time coming, but Jones has finally returned to the madcap world of Howls Moving Castle (1986) and Castle in the Air (1991) with an equally rollicking, enchantment-filled tale. I guess Castle is set in the same universe. Great, another three for you. |

| I re-posted the comment I have on Women and Fantasy on Library Thing which caused quite a stir there. I also mentioned the WoGF challenge. It did elicit some criticism of WWE for the number of books missing. I have explained that you only have a small number of people adding books and don't allow users to enter their own books yet. The author author Janny Wurts was somewhat miffed that only 3 of her books are included and those co-authored with a man. She also exclaimed at the omission of Janet Morris. This is one of the most asked questions we get, often in angry or accusatory tones. The simple answer is that your favorite author was not nominated for any of the awards or book lists we currently cover. That's it. There's no conspiracy to defraud your favorite of their rightful place in the annals of SF/F/H.
As we add more awards we'll be adding more authors along with them. Please be patient and try to understand that data collection is time consuming and often difficult. We like to think that with over 1,200 authors to choose from you might find a new favorite if you look around a bit."
Oh look! A site is doing something with plans to encourage people to read books by female authors they weren't familiar with, also allowing for more female authors to be added to their database. Let's get really angry because they don't have MY books! |

| I don't think that makes Wurts' comments that much better. A quick look around would show that they've been adding books by female authors in general only since January, and the smartest thing to do would probably be, instead of chelping about it on another forum, signing up and suggesting some more books to add. Including her own.
Srsly, it's not that difficult a concept. Oh, a book I want to read/think should be included isn't here. Do I a) yell about it to other people somewhere else or b) sign up and help the site expand their database?
It mostly surprises me that she's aware of the issues surrounding SF/F and female authors, but then doesn't connect "women don't get published as easily" with "women don't win awards as easily" with "this site only added award nominees/winners pre-January 2013". It's not so much the site's problem then, unless they weren't doing anything to address it. And they are. Isn't that what this challenge is about?

Forget that we initiated a reading challenge with the expressed intent to shed light on that inequality and to engage our members in a constructive effort to promote ALL women authors. Forget that we've committed ourselves to adding any missing authors or books that our members request to our database in addition to our usual author and book updates. Forget that we're on pace to have well over 500 quality reviews of books by women authors for the challenge alone. Clearly we're just a bunch of assholes trying to keep Janny Wurts down. How dare we not have every frelling book by every frelling author in our database! My, oh, my. There's a lot of anger in that thread and some of it is affecting me. I'm going to go chill for a bit then I'll mosey on over to Library Thing and pose a few questions to our detractors. |

| Thanks for adding the Gemma Doyle stuff for Libba Bray. Given how extensive this forum is with numerous requests, I'm impressed with how quickly you're updating things.
I hate when people complain (and not even to the people who might make a difference) rather than trying to be part of the solution. It looks like someone explained the reasons that her umpteen books and those of others aren't all listed, but I don't see it completely sinking in in any practical way on that end. |

I didn't mean to stir things up by my post. I was hoping to promote the challenge as part of a general discussion on women and genre fiction. I think the initiative is great. I think Wurtz's anger is more a reaction to the state of genre publishing. I don't think she realises that the effort is ongoing to include women's authors and that this enhancement to the site only started two months ago.
I'm sure if you communicate with her, if she sees it in that light, she will chill out herself and having authors on your side can only be a plus for the site. |

I was actually wondering if something like this might happen at some point, since the issue of gender in SF has been fraught for a long time, and discussions often seem to devolve into making assumptions about the motives of others in the conversation. You never know when you might unintentionally step into something. I made a comment on an SF Signal post a few days back expressing some disappointment about how the Nebula nominees have been trending more toward fantasy and away from SF over the years (a factual observation), and someone soon added a snarky comment about how the novel nominees were "girly" this year, which then led to a huge pile-on against SF fans who don't like women writers (!). (The criticism of the gender-biased comments was deserved, but I thought it was interesting that an SF vs. F discussion morphed almost immediately into male writers/fans vs. female writers/fans, when there's no necessary connection between those two dichotomies.) There are very important issues surrounding gender bias in SFF and publishing, but unfortunately the internet, which could be (and sometimes is) a chance to educate people about such issues, also lends itself to the proliferation of knee-jerk responses and judgments.
But, hey, don't they say that any publicity is good publicity?! |

Or I should say that our members were. I've discovered it's a quintet instead of quartet. Wrinkle in Time, Wind in the Door, Swiftly Titling Planet, Many Waters, and the fifth is An Acceptable Time. If you'd of asked me a year ago, I would've thought the thing was a trilogy. |

Location: UK | @ Rhonda - I loved Marissa Meyer's Cinder,a nice example of well written YA where romance is not at the centre of everything.Waiting impatiently for Scarlett to come out here in UK.We are often months behind US publication dates,and then waiting for the library to get it,and then wait my turn on the waiting list.....(sigh) I'll get it eventually.But second books can be tricky,I hope it is up to scratch.
Aarrgghh.Just checked,there is ONE copy among 39 libraries,so it may be quite a while before I get it! lol |

(Mainly, because I had just picked up the book when I discovered this challenge, so I figured I'd keep going and make it my first read...) In the meantime, on to a new woman of genre fiction! Whee.

| I have a random question. Normally, when I click "read" on a book written by a female author, I have the option of clicking the box to apply it to the WoGF challenge. When I click on Robin Hobb's books, this doesn't seem to be happening: https://www.worldswithoutend.com/novel.asp?id=1150

Location: Michigan | That's fine -- I don't actually enjoy manga art, myself. There's something about the big eyes -- seems to have the opposite effect it's supposed to have on me. I mostly just checked it out to get a better idea of Miyuke Miyabe's work.
However, The Book of Heroes is a novel. Would you be able to add it? It seems to be the only thing I can get through my library of hers that's in English.

| I can't remember if these have already been requested, but could you add the Kate Elliott books, Spirit Gate, Shadow Gate, and Traitors' Gate in the Crossroads series, as well as Cold Magic and Cold Fire, which are the first two books in the Spiritwalker Trilogy?
