Biography
Born in Prague, George Gibian became a leading scholar of Russian and comparative literature at Cornell University. A recipient of Fulbright, Guggenheim, American Philosophical Society, and Rockefeller Foundation fellowships, he edited The Man in the Black Coat: Russia's Lost Literature of the Absurd and wrote The Interval of Freedom: Russian Literature During the Thaw and Tolstoj and Shakespeare.
His work also included editing major classics of Russian literature and contributing to outlets such as the Wall Street Journal, The New Republic, the Christian Science Monitor, and Newsday. He died in 1999.
