Genre-Lit Flicks

Genre-Lit Flicks

Love them or hate them, there are hundreds of genre books, many of them classics, that have been adapted for the silver screen - with sometimes mixed results. This list will help guide you to movies you didn't know existed or even to the books that inspired some of your favorite films. The list is far from complete but we'll keep adding to it as more movies come out and we're certain that our members will point out many that we've missed.

About the Genre-Lit Flicks List

We would like to thank WWEnder and Uber User Engelbrecht (Ben Oldham) for all the work he has put into curating this list for WWEnd. Below you will find a description of his process for creating the list.

The WWEnd Genre-Lit Flicks list is curated by Uber user Engelbrecht (Ben Oldham). He took our original list of around 200 books and made many cuts, corrections, and additions to get it to the current list of 597 books. This is a live list so more books will be added from time to time.

As part of the process of updating the list Engelbrecht created the following guidelines to help determine what books and movies qualify for inclusion.

Genre-Lit Flicks Guidelines:

  • The movie/TV show must be adapted from written genre works (tie-ins aren't included).
  • Both the book and the movie must be available in English (English subtitles are OK).
  • This isn't intended to be an exhaustively complete list - things that are too obscure are liable to be left out.
  • Roughly speaking, a movie production should have around 500 IMDB ratings to qualify as notable.
    • However, some movies with a lower number of ratings can be included if either the work or the work's author are notable.
    • I find myself dipping below this cutoff on occasion - it's no bad thing to bring some visibility to an interesting author/work/movie that might otherwise be forgotten.
    • Foreign films are included if they meet a somewhat higher standard of notability - perhaps 1000 IMDB ratings.
  • Individual episodes of TV shows aren't included unless they are truly iconic, like the original Twilight Zone episodes.
  • Movie sequals/franchise movies aren't included unless they are actually based on a written work.
  • Non-genre movies made from genre works are allowable, but genre movies made from non-genre works are not.
  • Movies made from plays are generally not included (there are a couple of exceptions like Peter Pan).
  • Genre movies made from non-fiction works are generally not included.
  • Anthropomorphic fantasy is generally not included, especially for works aimed at younger audiences.
  • Movies for the very young or movies made from books written for the very young are generally not included.
  • Movies made from fairy tales, especially "classic" fairy tales with no single author are generally not included.
  • Movies made from myths & legends, having no single author, are not included.
  • Superhero movies are not included.
  • Some higher notability movies adapted from graphic novels are included.

We'll try to keep abreast with movies that are forthcoming, but will be somewhat conservative with this - many projects get stuck in "development hell", and some projects never get released, even though the film has been shot.

As with all things, there can be some grey areas and edge cases. While it's generally required that a movie be "adapted from", as opposed to "inspired by" a work, some things just can't be left out - such as the Conan movies.

If you know of any books made into film that you think we're missing you can use the guidelines above to determine if they will fit our list before you send reccomendations.
