Random quote: "Swords, Lances, arrows, machine guns, and even high explosives have had far less power over the fates of nations than the typhus louse, the plague flea, and the yellow-fever mosquito. Civilizations have retreated from the plasmodium of malaria, and armies have crumbled into rabbles under the onslaught of cholera spirilla, or of dysentery and typhoid bacilli. Huge areas have been devastated by the trypanosome that travels on the wings of the tsetse fly, and generations have been harassed by the syphilis of a courtier. War and conquest and that herd existence which is an accompaniment of what we call civilization have merely set the stage for these more powerful agents of human tragedy." ― Hans Zinsser, Rats, Lice and History

Clarification, please. Am I understanding that the books for this challenge cannot have won an award or been nominated for one and must only be on a list? For example, The Martian Chronicles is on a ton of lists but was never nominated or won an award, so I believe it would qualify. But what about The Dispossessed, which is on a bunch of lists, but also won some awards? If I choose it for one of the lists it is on and not the award, does it count? Thanks for the insight.

Ideally the book should not have won or been nominated for any award. So no red box with the book cover. Of course people can just ignore the rules and do what they want which would be a sign of the times.

Thanks! That's what I thougt and I wanted to make sure that I followed the rules as they were intended.  And yes, seeing what books others had selected made me ask the question. I have books that I could include that I had planned to read, but they have also won or been nominated for awards, so I'll just have to find another book to complete my challenge!

Glad to be part of this challenge. Finally making a dent in defining books of the 50s.

Glad to host it. I'm ashamed to say I haven't even started yet. I seem to be on a crime fiction binge this year.
