Synopsis
Locus Award winning and Hugo and Sturgeon Award nominated short story. It originally appeared in The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, September 1996. The story can also be found in the anthologies The Best from Fantasy & Science Fiction: The Fiftieth Anniversary Anthology (2000), edited by Edward L.
