From the Author's Preface
This book was not intended, nofr is it presented, as a complete, encyclopedic history of fantasy. It is instead an introduction to fantasy as a literary form; the historical and bibliographaphical materials included are illustrative. Most prevous work on the theory of fantasy has appeared within studies of other forms--sceince fiction, "weird" or horror fiction, epic and mythic literature--or in studies of individual authors. No single work has dealt with fantasy aline-with all of fantasy, and with nothing but fantasy. The lack of critical consensus about what fantasy is and what it consists of has caused the current critical situation: an amazing outburst of creativity in the writing of fantasy matched by a near-total vacuum in criticism. Many critics--notably Eleanor Cameron, L. Sprague De Camp, and Lloyd Alexander, all fantasists themselves--have written excellent studies of some aspects of fantasy; none has tried to consider fantasy as a whole.
This book is an attempt to remedy this situation, It is offered to the many readers, students, and librarians interested in fantasy today, in hopes that it will enunciate and clarify the principles that define fantasy as a form.
