Synopsis

Philadelphia, 1918: Three friends--brave, confident Viola Trenmore, clever but shy Robert Drayton, and Viola's strong and hot-tempered brother, Terry--discover a mysterious grey dust from an ancient glass vial which is capped with a silver figure of Cerberus, the 3-headed mythological dog that guarded the gate to "Pluto's realm", that is, to Hades. The fine dust of Purgatory transports them to the gateway dimension of Ulithia. From there they journey two hundred years into the future hell that is Philadelphia in 2118.

The Philadelphia of 2118 is no longer a bustling metropolis but instead a completely isolated city recovering from an unknown disaster. The City is a dictatorship where winner takes all is the rule.

The Heads of Cerberus was originally serialized in the pulp magazine The Thrill Book in 1919, and it was first published in book form in 1952. It's a rediscovered classic of science fiction, set in a dystopian twenty-second-century society where the winner takes all, is a direct precursor to The Hunger Games.

The Heads of Cerberus is also one of the first dystopian novels ever written; the story is also an early example of what became known in the 1950s as "social science-fiction."

It is also believed to be the first Sci-Fi book to use the ideas of Parallel Worlds and Alternate Time Lines.
