History
Henry Holt & Company was founded in 1866, by German emigres Henry Holt and Frederick Leypoldt. The company prospered and grew to produce titles from international literary stars like H.G. Wells, Hermann Hesse, and Robert Louis Stevenson, published in a variety of different genres. Nearly a hundred years later the firm merged with Holt, Rinehart and Winston, becoming HRW in 1960, which was in turn purchased by another three- letter acronym publisher, HBJ, in 1986. Harcourt Brace Jovanovich sold the retail publishing portion of the HRW line to the Georg von Holtzbrinck Publishing Group of Germany, bringing things back full circle to the homeland of its founders.
