Science Fiction & Fantasy Book Lists

In our quest to bring you the best books in Science Fiction and Fantasy we've started to expand our database beyond the confines of the 10 awards we already cover. But where else do you go to find great books besides the awards? Well, it turns out that SF/F geeks like to make lists of the great books they read and want to share and there are many great lists already out there.

We'll be bringing you new lists from time to time so you'll never run out of books to read. If you're a member you can follow along with BookTrackr™ and see how you match up.

The Lists

SF Masterworks

SF Masterworks is a series of science fiction books published by Orion Publishing Group through it's imprints Millennium and Gollancz. Beginning in 1999 the list is made up of select science-fiction books from as far back as the H.G. Wells. Malcolm Edwards, managing director with Orion, created the list with the goal of bringing important books back into print.

The books are numbered in series publication order, not original publication date, and are highly prized and collected.

Fantasy Masterworks

Fantasy Masterworks is a series of fantastic fiction classics from Orion Publishing Group through it's imprints Millenium and Gollancz. The series is a companion series for their SF Masterworks line.

The books are numbered in series publication order, not original publication date, and are highly prized and collected.

The ISFDB Top 100 Books (Balanced List)

The Internet Speculative Fiction Database has composed this list from novels which have been nominated for an award scored based on the number of award wins and nominations. The results are then sorted by score. The list is not an attempt to list the best works in the genre, just those which won the most awards. Since the proliferation of genre-related awards is a fairly recent phenomenon, the list tends to favor more recent works.

The Year's Best Science Fiction

The Year's Best Science Fiction books are a series of science fiction anthologies edited by Gardner Dozois that are generally considered to be the anthology series for serious readers of Science Fiction. Each volume includes the editor's insightful summation of the year's events and a lengthy list of honorable mentions.

Locus Best SF Novels of All-Time

Locus Magazine's annual poll periodically includes 'all-time best' categories for novel or author. The Best SF Novel of All-Time poll was last held in 1998 and was restricted to books published before 1990.

WWEnd Top Nominated Books of All-Time

The WWEnd Top Nominated Books of All-Time is a list of all novels with four or more nominations each across the ten awards we cover here on WWEnd. The awards are: Hugo, Nebula, BSFA, Locus SF, Locus Fantasy, Campbell, BFS, World Fantasy, PKD and Clarke.

David Pringle's Best 100 Science Fiction Novels

David Pringle is a famed Scottish editor who has written several guides to science fiction. His book Science Fiction: The 100 Best Novels has been widely read and is still highly regarded today. In the book, Pringle lists his picks for the best SF novels written between 1949 and 1984 with a decided lean towards British SF.
