You really should try something by Ted Chiang or Greg Egan - both fabulous writers, and just about the most thoughtful writers out there.

Chiang's been writing for twenty years, but only has two collections out (no novels), but practically every story he writes is nominated for/wins some award or other.

Egan is hard, HARD SF, which may or may not be your cup of tea, but he grapples with the science in science fiction like no one else.

Theory of Bastards is another I'd recommend to you - it incorporates a lot of well researched, cutting-edge real-world science on primate behavior, much of it eye-opening.

Hope I'm not doing too much damage to your next years reading plans!  Every December, I put together a spreadsheet list of books to read in the coming year, but every year, it seems like I never get to even half of them!
