Hi everyone, this is the thread to discuss the 'Once Upon A Time' reading challenge for 2026. The scope of the challenge is Science Fiction, Horror and Fantasy influenced by fairytales, folklore and mythology. How the scope is interpreted is up to each participant from retellings of classic fairytales to the motifs and themes of folklore and mythology.

I'm starting with 'Little, Big' by John Crowley which won, or was nominated for a bunch of awards in the early 80s and certainly.seems to capture that sense of wonder and mystery of places not being what they seem.

I started my challenge with 'Little, Big' by John Crowley and I really enjoyed it. I found it challenging, interesting but at times confusing and frustrating. It's a wonderful literary work that demands a fair bit of attention and I feel that if I read it five times I would take something different from it each time.

I too got irritated with Little Big,too ,got to admit.as an SF rather than a fantasy fan I ended up DNFing it.Extremely unusual for me to do that I am almost obsessive at completing a book.Possibly DNF two books a year but they are usually light fluff kindle unlimited stuff The actual physical book was so big and heavy, the printing style was soirritating that I could only read for a short time. I had such high hopes because I love books about ancient magical houses,so it was sad I didnt take to it.
Maybe if I tried again with an ebook I may do better. After all it won 2 awards and was nominated for 5 others. We'll see
